First, create your plan: Look deep within in a steady way. how she decided
to invest in her DRALA program
Andrea has asked me to write a few lines to you describing the process I went through in making the decision to participate in this programme. I am happy to do so.
My position as a VP of an educational post secondary institution was eliminated just before Christmas. Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise. While I did not seek to leave the university, my job had become very challenging with routine 10-hour days and frequent weekend work. I was completely exhausted and had lost any semblance of balance in my life. The job I had once loved and enjoyed and demanded the best of me, also robbed me of the characteristics of me that I liked – my ability to establish and nurture relationships; develop and lead healthy teams; lean on a supportive boss and peer team, and experience joy. It took everything I had just to keep up with the workload.
I knew that I wanted to explore a different way of being a leader. My modus operandi had been to rely on my left brain, surveying the problem, developing a strategic plan and assigning roles to my team and measuring the results. Important but not everything. This approach I came to understand was limited because of the person I am. I feel deeply, and find great joy in supporting others to learn and grow and develop their capabilities. I value balance in my life and could see how it was absent in my own experience and must therefore be absent in the lives of my staff through my example and from what I observed.
Yet, I was very reluctant to take the leap into Andrea’s process. It seemed too fluffy and I could not see the results clearly. Actually, in hindsight (I am halfway through) I realized that I could not envision the results (or the new, expanded me) because I couldn’t imagine what it would look like. At the end of the day, I decided to trust Andrea and the DRALA process that she had developed, based on her own sincerity and confidence and the success of others. For me, the style I had employed for an entire career (more masculine), was clearly no longer working for me and wearing me out.
The DRALA process has been an experiential one for me and very hands on. It has not been book knowledge that I have absorbed but something deep inside of me has been awakened and I am learning to articulate it. I like myself better. My particular intention was to expand my leadership style so I could be more authentic and be in a position to bring much more to the table. My fear was that it would be hard to talk about the process and be taken seriously by my peers. Instead, I have discovered that as I have begun to share, the response has been very positive and affirming.
I am currently devising a communication to my professional contacts, those people waiting to hear from me as I begin networking, letting them know how much I appreciate our relationship, what I am busy with (professional development investing in self in order to be able to bring more to the table), and that I will be in touch with them again when that process is finished.
My ongoing motivation is derived from the success I am experiencing. It looks like a person who is ever more confident in her voice which reflects more authentically who she is. It is a softer, more expanded person, a person I would want to work with and be in relationship with.
I could go on, however, I think I’ve gone on too long already. There’s an expression I have used many times in my own facilitation work that goes something like this: if you want the same results, keep trying the same methods. If you want different results, try something different.

I haven’t always been clear about my own heroic leadership. In fact, I hit rock bottom in 2001. I was brought up Tibetan Buddhist and strongly socialized with the value of compassion. In 2001 I was working for a large software development lab in Toronto which was focused on financial profit. My requests for decisions to be made from compassion fell on deaf ears. I felt powerless, and I eventually had an emotional breakdown.
My doctor took me off work and I dove into an intensive healing journey through traditional therapy and trauma energetic therapy. After years of processing and clearing my own emotional hurts, I began to look towards helping others and enrolled in an MEd Counselling Psychology.
I graduated with my degree and worked as a therapist for a couple of years. I also completed three business training programs. I began to get a feeling I had more to give. I had long-term spiritual experience through my Buddhist practice which gives me powerful presence. I also LOVE business, and frankly I am ambitious. So I started coaching two Investment Advisors in the financial industry.
We worked on relational issues and business development. Within six months my clients were having remarkable results. Their income increased 25-30% and they were promoted to being Wealth Advisors!
I have gone on to complete three years of study and certification in a visioning method called Soul Art. I love this creative method because it is elegant, fun and produces visions that come from our core truth. I have enhanced this artistic method, making it more focused and strategic for business leaders in my Heroic Leadership Vision Sessions.
Two years ago I formalized my new paradigm coaching. By the end of 2015 I was attracting exclusively business leaders as clients.
Today I work with leaders, empowering them in heart-centered holistic leadership that is life-affirming for them, their families, and their businesses, drawing on their intellect, their emotions and their spirit. I recognize there is a vital component missing in traditional business training. Coming out of school, leaders were taught the essentials of business, yet they were taught neither emotional nor spiritual intelligence, two qualities essential to good leadership. This has led to unavoidably half-hearted leadership where leaders may feel forced to make choices they regret – choices that hurt people, harm the environment, and ultimately burden the leader’s heart with scars.
Heroic Leadership Coaching was founded on the belief that if leaders have access to emotionally and spiritually sound business coaching, they will create heart-centered strategic plans and make better decisions. This alone will make for a better world.
Through trial and error I have discovered there are two key components to delivering such a service. First, it is necessary to create a strong retreat program to remove leaders from their day-to-day concerns; within the quiet, they can relax and access deep inner wisdom to create innovative holistic strategic plans.
